There are few things more irritating to a commenter on a blog than those three dreadful words: “Comment Awaiting Moderation”. Just think about it. Something you’ve written has moved a reader enough to carefully craft a thoughtful comment, and as soon as they click ‘submit’, their comment is halted. It’s no secret that we live in a world of instant gratification. We want to see our blog comment now!

The issue of comment moderation is one of more than just online annoyances. When you moderate comments on your blog, you slow down the speed and natural flow of conversation on your blog. If a person takes the time to join the conversation by leaving a comment, and they have to wait for that comment to be approved, there’s a chance that they may not bother to comment again. We understand that spam is a concern, but the best way to fight spam is with a plugin like Askimet.

So, when is it okay to moderate blog comments? If you’re an extremely high-traffic, high-comment blog that is constantly dealing with spam comments, trolls, etc., then moderating comments may be wise in your case. Otherwise, you should seriously consider letting the comments flow freely!
